The Official Match Ball Sponsor for the Super 12 Tournament is Amabokoboko. Not the Bokke hehehe, Amabokoboko is a South African sport brand focussing mainly on rugby and netball.  They supply rugby jerseys, technical warm up tops, tracksuits, netball dresses, shorts, etc.  In the near future they will also supply netball balls, cricket balls and soccer balls.  For the Rugby World Cup last year they had developed a range of Amabokoboko supporters wear that is on display on our website.

We took time to chat to the CEO of Amabokoboko Sports PTY LTD, Johan Smal regarding their sponsorship to the Super 12 tournament, this is what he had to say:

What made Amabokoboko commit to becoming the Official Match Ball Sponsor for the Super 12 Tournament?
Firstly, my roots are in the Eastern Cape. I was born in Cala, went to school in PE, played EP Craven Week in 1983 and club rugby for three clubs until I ended my playing career in 1994. Secondly, EP was the first province to integrate in 1991/92. The name Amabokoboko symbolises unity in sport and rugby in particular and EP was in the for front. Now Amabokoboko find itself in the embrio phase of brand development and I think it is appropriate to grow with the EP and Border Rugby Unions.

What’s your take on the tournament thus far?
It is good for a ball supplier to witness high scores and also to find that one game was won with a drop goal.  Grassroots are doing a fantastic job to update me in the Western Cape with the scores and increased interest the public show in the tournament.

Do you have any favorites in the Super 12 Tournament?
Yes I do and this is based on my own playing career and inherent loyalty.  I played for Parks from 1990-1994 and was fortunate to be captain of the 1st team in 1992.  Although they lost against Despatch in the 1st round I hope they can reach the same heights as last year

Who do you think would win the tournament looking at the current standings and plays ?
If one look at the log position and take the points in consideration, Despatch seems to be the danger side with both the Police teams in their neck, but as we have seen in the Vodacom Super 15 Tournament, there are always a team that can come from behind, therefore I think Harlequins are also in with a chance.  It all depend on the teams commitment in the second half of the tournament which is normally mentally the toughest part of the competition.
